Types Of Group Fitness Classes & What To Expect

Starting your fitness routine for the first time can be daunting but it's useful to have some kind of idea of what you are getting into before joining your first class.

At each of our clubs, we offer a variety of group fitness classes that suit various people of all fitness levels. When you start searching for the class for you, remember if you don't like one, you can always book another by logging into our Member Area and choosing your class from our class timetable. Check out this list of classes and what you can expect for each one:

Spin
A spin class is a great full-body workout that uses a stationary bike. A lot of the time, spin classes include fast-paced music that helps spike your heart rate at different times during the workout. You will also find there will be periods of sitting and standing on the bike. Usually, spin classes are about 45 minutes long. We would recommend bringing a towel and a water bottle to keep hydrated when attending this class.

Pilates
While often compared with Yoga, Pilates is very different. Repetitive movements, focusing on the core and working isolated or full-body muscle groups, are what Pilates is made up of. Whereas Yoga focuses more on breathwork, flexibility and long-held poses. Pilates tones your body and enhances your endurance. You can expect exercises such as planks, side planks and crunches to improve your posture and core strength.

HIIT
The acronym HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training. This class works by switching between intense cardio and strength exercises at 80% of your maximum with periods of less intense or recovery movements while still keeping actively engaged. This class is for someone looking to burn some serious calories, and fast!

Yoga
Yoga is one of the most popular fitness classes out there but did you know there are different types of Yoga to try? From calming Hatha to energising Vinyasa, Yoga is made up of different movements and poses that concentrate on different muscle groups in the body. Yoga promotes flexibility, toning and strength, and is a great way to improve posture. Yoga is an ideal option for those who are looking to start their day off with a clear mind or release the stress of the day they have had.

Zumba
Zumba is a class that takes exercises you already know and love and turns them into an aerobic dance class that will make you forget you're at the gym! Zumba classes are made up of dance routines that mix high and low-intensity exercises. Zumba does not require you to have any dancing skills because everyone is there for the same thing, to sweat it out and have fun! If you love to dance and are tired of traditional workouts then Zumba might be the class for you!

Group fitness classes are a great way to meet new people, stay committed and join a supportive community with like-minded goals. Try different ones and find the one that works for you - explore your club's class timetable today.
