At each of our clubs, we pride ourselves in creating a community built on like-minded goals and supportive people. We asked our Southend Manager Kirsty about the community she and her team have welcomed into the club and some of the fun things they do to keep everyone excited about their time at Welcome Gym!
How does your club actively promote a sense of community among its members? The majority of our team have been part of the club for many years, and having a low turnover rate in your team suggests they are content and in a job which gives them a sense of purpose. This loyalty from them helps build a sense of community among our members old and new. There is always a friendly familiar face to approach whether it's to talk gym or anything else.
Can you share an example that you have witnessed of members supporting each other in achieving their fitness goals within the gym?I have seen many times the support our members give to each other in achieving their fitness goals. But, the support I've witnessed that is more important in my eyes is welcoming new members to our club, making them feel part of our community. Many people suffer from gym anxiety nowadays so to take those first steps to come to enquire or join is a big deal. Our member community has changed daunting experiences into positive enjoyable ones.
Are there any specific group classes or training sessions at your club that emphasise teamwork and camaraderie?Jump into any of our group classes, all instructor-lead, and see camaraderie. Our members are not here just for fitness, they are here to see friends and socialise too. For all ages and abilities, no one is excluded.
Besides working out, what social opportunities does the gym provide for members to connect and build relationships? We have held Zumbathons, member challenges and themed events to add to the member experience and bring some fun. Many large groups of our community join team members on days out, for coffee, picnics in the park, and nights out too. You have to let your hair down now and again π
On a lighter note, what's the most unique or entertaining community tradition or inside joke that has developed among the gym regulars? As we have a good rapport with many members, there can be a lot of banter. In classes, a saying we often use and has turned into a running joke 'I am going to show you what I want you to do'. From that, the class ends up with many changes and members doing different exercises than planned. Keeps the instructors on their toes.
What's the most unusual or creative workout attire you've spotted someone rocking at the gym?On a day-to-day basis, one of our members wears 80's attire, bright clothing and a headband, and she looks great! On our themed nights, we have seen some amazing costumes. Some, you would have seen on our social channels.
What's the funniest or most memorable "oops" moment that turned into a shared joke among members? If you've done Yoga or Pilates, then oops moments happen all the time! Natural releases occur from the twisting and bending movements involved in certain poses. Not only is this normal but may also be good for you. If you're within the Yoga/Pilates community, you'll know what I mean π
We are dedicated to creating a close-knit community in each of our clubs. Our team's loyalty and the welcoming atmosphere among members contribute to this sense of belonging. From supportive group classes to social events, we prioritise building connections beyond fitness so you can succeed all around. Our community shares laughter, inside jokes, and memorable moments, making every visit to Welcome Gym not just a workout but a joyful experience.
Join us in this journey of health, camaraderie, and fun!
